Reader Question: Junior Panton Chairs

I received this reader question from Michelle last week, and figured the best way to get some quality advice was to let the rest of our readers answer the question. So here it is;

I have the kids Junior Panton chairs and would love some feedback on what table the 'design inclined' out there would team the chairs with. Seeking a working table. Somthing sizable enough to sit and draw at, yet looks fabulous with the Panton.

Many thanks
Michelle

Martini Side Table

A while ago we were looking for a new side table for our living room and I'm a little sad that this one didn't exist yet. I love the sculptural shape and high gloss finish, and that persimmon color is fantastic! Made of recycled aluminum, this little number is light weight and even suitable for outdoor use. Definitely a fun and reasonably affordable option if you're looking to liven up your space.

Modern Scrap Table

There is no better price than free, and that's exactly how much you should be paying for scrap wood. No matter where you live, I guarantee that there is a nice supply of scrap wood somewhere not to far away. So go out and collect it all, and follow these directions from Instructables and you can have a amazing looking and nearly free table just like the one pictured above. Even if you don't think your DIY skills are up to it, what's the worst that can happen, messing up some free wood?

Scandinavian Dining Spaces

1.png

Let's start this week off with a big helping of Scandinavian dining spaces, shall we? Because, really. These are some of the most inspiring interiors I've seen in a long time and it would be an utter shame not to share them with you. I spotted them over the weekend on Emma's Design Blog, a great source of enlightenment for lovers of the Scandi Modern style. The images come from RUM, a Danish design site.

New from Ikea

I can't believe it's almost time for new stuff to start showing up at Ikea. Here is a sneek peak of some of my favorite new items that will start showing up at your local Ikea starting in February. Some of these things will only be seasonal, but hopefully some will stick around for longer than that.

201001040745.jpg

New versions of the classic POANG will include a Lounge chair ($229) and a swivel base ($89).

201001040749.jpg

I wish there was a better picture of this SJOVIK table ($279) and buffet ($399). I love that the buffet has the same pattern as the Ikea PS rug. Both were designed by Eva Lilja Lowenhielm.

At only $129 the SVALBO solid wood table looks like an absolute steal. The sideboard table that matches will only set you back $79.

There are some great new lamps too from $13 - $59.

WURK

Here's a little whimsical eye candy to start you Monday off. Designed by WURK a young Dutch design company these playful pieces are a lighthearted twist on the ordinary. The "it hûske" project shown below is being dubbed as microarchitecture and recently has won some awards across the pond.

The company's interdisciplinary collaboration of graphic design, industrial design and architecture round out their pieces very well.

Crate and Barrel Struts their stuff

200908190733.jpg

I don't usually get excited about the offerings of Crate and Barrel as much of their furniture tends to be a little too traditional for my taste, but when I first saw a picture of this Strut table I was seriously impressed. I love the simplicity of the design and the emphasis on the making the structural components beautiful. The only down side is the $700 price tag for a table that only seats four.

200908190742.jpg

If you like the looks of the strut table, you should check out the Strut Credenza as well. It's equally appealing to the eyes and has an even more pronounced mid century look to it. Between these two pieces of furniture, my opinions of Crate and Barrel may be changing. Do you have any other favorites from Crate and Barrel that I should know about?

Moduture

Moduture1.png Moduture is an up-and-coming furniture design line headed by the talented husband and wife duo Brady and Charlotte Wilkinson. Charlotte will be unveiling her new collection at this week's CA Boom Design Show, June 26 - 28. Though the collection is small (only three pieces so far), it is loaded with options: a bookcase with movable slats, a coffee table that transforms into a puzzle table, and a stackable cabinet with interchangeable covers! All her pieces are beautiful and have a certain timelessness that I think will appeal to a lot of different modern design lovers. If you're in California this weekend, be sure to stop by and check out Moduture in person. As an added bonus, Charlotte is offering a discount code for CA Boom tickets: enter code "MOD" to receive $4 off your ticket price.Moduture2.png All photos by Jessica Peterson

Pine Folding Table

200906160721.jpg

Muji is one of my favorite brands out there. This table is a good example of why I love them so much. It's a very simple design, and made out of one of the most inexpensive woods there is, pine. It's a handsome little pine folding table but looking at it you wouldn't expect it to cost very much. Of course that is the case with so many pieces of modern furniture which normally turn out to be very expensive. In this case it actually does cost about as much as you would expect it to. $64 to be exact. Not bad for a 14h x 32.5w x 20"d table from one of my favorite brands.

Available from the MoMa Store for $64

If you love Muji make sure you check out their US online store that opened in April.

MCM-Style Table from Bald Man Mod

MCM1.png

I was browsing around Ol' Etsyland when I spotted this lovely handmade, MCM-Style table from seller Bald Man Mod. It struck me as something wonderful, so I thought I'd share. Here's what Baldy himself has to say about the table:

The bald man releases the beast! This is a freshly built mid century modern style table- it ain't 50 years old, but has the same swank feel.

Here are the details:
27.5 inches long, with the table top tapering from 14 inches to 11.5 in width. Table itself is 11 inches tall plus the leg height. The inner cabinet is 9.5 inches deep, and the door is 11.5 inches long by 9.5 inches tall. The inner space is also 9.5 inches tall.

MCM2.png

Made of 3/4 inch birch ply, with a nice dose of semigloss water based polycrylic. The door and inner wall are veneered with walnut and a hot racing stripe of maple. Used biscuit joinery to keep it together, and veneered with a vacuum press.

Customize the table by choosing leg style and height - hairpin or square tapered steel from 12" to 18". Legs are vintage, fresh from their original boxes. All tables are made to order.

DIY Eero Saarinen Side Table

Table1.png

I saw this little DIY project recently on one of my favorite blogs, Plastolux. Get a couple of old Bose speaker stands, some fiber board, and paint and you've got yourself a Saarinen side table! Very, very cool. Great job, Tyler! See more and read about the process here.

While it may not feel like it in some parts of the country, summer really is just around the corner. That mean's that Ikea has a whole bunch of new items coming out that will be for summertime only. Summer items should start hitting your local Ikea in about two weeks. Most of the time summer items are available through June or July, but when they are gone, they are gone. Here is a look at what you can expect this year.

Anson Table

200902250729.jpg

According to inmod, this table is styled after the "legendary designers Charles and Ray Eames". I guess they are referring to the wire base? In any case the Anson table does have a classic look to the design, one that would make it look good in just about any home. The melamine top comes in either black or white with an exposed plywood core. The pictures are a little misleading because this little guy only measures in at 10" high and 15" wide. At that small size I've got my eye on it for a bedside table.

Available at inmod for $74.

Chroma Table

The Chroma Table is one of those great simple side tables that is easy to take for granted. Its simple, has clean lines, and is pretty darn cheap. For the price you can probably even afford to get one of each size (small $45 and large $65). Atop the chrome wire bases sit the laminate tops, available in Maple, Expresso, or Amber. My personal favorite of course is the Maple. The only place I have found that carries these is MXYPLYZYK which is a cool new store with some great products. They are online, and have a brick and mortar store in New York. Their site is all Flash, and a little slow, but I think its worth it.

Available here.
