"Fashioned by" was formed in 2011 as a collaboration between Farrah Sit and Dana D'Amico who met in 2005 and together designed for Calvin Klein Home. Rooted in a shared design philosophy and common aesthetic, Farrah and Dana have created a collection reflecting honesty to materials and a timeless, minimalistic beauty.

What I love about the collection most is the thoughtful materials used. The porcelain hanging pots come with a vegetable tanned leather strap and antique brass fastener. The desk items have a similarly strong set of materials. Leather, walnut, ash, brass, porcelain, you just can't go wrong.

Drona Wine Rack

drona wine rackI love wine, and I love walnut, so it goes without saying that I would love to store my wine in a walnut wine rack. The Drona wine rack made by Jonathan Malphrus of Steric Design add some interesting geometry and nice contemporary craftsmanship to the typical wine rack. This Drona has a series of large hexagons connected by salvaged cherry joinery. It looks fantastic, and holds an impressive 35 bottles. There is a smaller version that only holds 5 bottles if that's more your thing.

Bark Decor :: I'm going hunting

bark decorI'm always impressed with the quality of products available on Etsy for such a little amount of money. Take for example these fantastic 11" x 17" pillow by Bark Decor. It's printed with eco friendly water based inks, and sun exposed. So yeah, it's green. Even better though is the fact that the hand drawn design looks AMAZING. All that for only $34.

Make sure you check out the rest of the goodies by the dynamic sister duo Bark Decor.

LBC Paper :: Handmade Paper Effects

LBCpaperWhat are 'handmade paper effects'?  Anything from pushpins to greeting cardspaper cut art to envelope stickers - all created by Etsy seller LBC Paper.  I'm particularly fond of her geometric pieces and those colorful pushpins pictured above (bottom right)!

Handmade paper goods from LBC Paper: $3 - $160

P.S.  LBC are the initials of the seller who, if you can correctly guess her middle name, will refund you 25% of your order.  Nice!

Stump

stumpI've had my eye one these Stump stools from Kalon Studios for a while now, and I can honestly say that they are growing on me more and more. In fact, they may even be moving from the "want" list to the "need" list. At $85 a piece for a unique hand made wood stool, I also think they are a great deal. I secretly want to try my hand a making a set myself too. Don't tell.

Giddyup Stool

Giddyup StoolPowder coated steel combined with wood is like strawberries dipped in sour cream and brown sugar, absolutely delectable. When you add the option of Marimekko fabric (with the stool, not the strawberries) you have a nearly infallible combination.  The Giddyup Stool is just such a combination. It's available in a number of different colors, and with a variety of wood, fabric or even leather seat options. All hand made in Portland Oregon by Quartertwenty.

Ali Sandifer Studio

In case you haven't noticed I'm really on a "craftsmanship" kick lately. While I am still passionate about affordable design, I find so much value in furniture that is well made. YLiving did a nice little interview recently on Chicago based Ali Sandifer Studio. While the article does focus a lot on the actual wood used to make their furniture, I think it's a good snapshot into the thought, time, and effort that goes into one piece of furniture. It sort of puts the $2,800 price tag into perspective a bit more.

Volk Furniture

volk 7 drawervolk 7 drawervok 7 drawerI just rolled back into town last night and I'm still sorting through all the great things I saw at ICFF and on the roadtrip home. One piece that did stand out for me at the show was this 7 Drawer Miniature Chest by Brian at Volk Furniture.  Volk is a Brooklyn based company, and all the furniture is designed and made by Brian in the Brooklyn Navy Ship Yard.  I had some time to look at this piece and some of the best parts about it are hard to capture with a picture.  The detail work is superb, as is the tactile quality of the whole thing. The waxed wood drawer slides were flawless and make the piece feel very special.  The knobs were salvaged off an old pump organ, and the drawer liners I believe were found by Brian's girlfriend. Modern, handmade, personal, beautiful, just the way furniture should be.

Carrie Strine quilts

Earlier this month I went to a fantastic textile themed art installation called Press Plush at GARFO Art Center (show runs through June 3rd) and ever since I have been really inspired by all things fabric. Along that same line, NYC based Carrie Strine happens to be doing some fantastic quilts right now, that I absolutely love. They are simple handmade quilts with a modern flair. They are being billed as everything from "Luxury Moving Blanket Throws" to "Linen Crib Quilt". To me they are all works of art.

Handmade Modern Quilts by Carrie Strine $150 - $350.

Design Studio: Standard Made

I usually reserve Friday's for my "Way Back When" posts, a look at fantastic design from the golden years of modern. Today I'm introducing a new theme I hope to cover more consistently, modern american studio design. There is so much great furniture design going on here in the states and internationally but I have been hesitant to cover it as it is not "affordable". You can see some of my conflicted musings here and here. While lamenting about another great furniture maker today that I would not be covering I remembered a part of GRM's original mission statement. "We hope to be able to connect passionate designers with the masses and become a catalyst for change in the modern contemporary world." I realized that by not covering boutique furniture makers like Standard Made, I was perhaps denying my readers the chance to connect with some of the most innovative, passionate designers out there. So affordability be dammed. Let's support the little guy trying to make it in this big corporate modern world. With that may I introduce you to Adam Rogers of Standard Made.

About Adam...

Adam Rogers is a furniture designer / maker.

Adam is devoted to the pursuit of harmony between modern design and quality craftsmanship. His work showcases a clean aesthetic inspired by classic modern design, with an emphasis on amplifying subtlety through details, executed by a maker trained in the traditions of furniture making.

Prior to committing himself to the design and production of objects and returning to graduate school for a masters degree in furniture design and woodworking, Adam spent years in corporate architecture following his undergraduate studies in architecture and interior architecture, serving as a designer on projects ranging from residential to university buildings. Seeking a more personal relationship to his work, his focus has shifted scale. With an understanding of the impact an object can have on an environment, the context of a piece is never without consideration.

Adam is exactly the kind of guy I want to see succeed in this world. He has a beautiful line of furniture, all of which has clean lines and subtle but beautiful joinery. All of it is designed and hand made by himself. Photo's and pricing are below.
